Breast Augmentation: It Has a Long, Glorious History, And It’s Completely Safe

Femininity has a lot to do with the female breasts. Maybe this is why there’s much hue and cry everywhere about the aesthetics of the organ. Everyone seems to have his or her opinion about the ideal size and shape of it. However, by the rule of nature, not all are blessed with what’s ‘ideal.’

In more unfortunate cases, development of the organ does not happen sufficiently. And, the ‘opinions’ soon pour in. ‘You have small boobs; your figure is kind of disproportionate because of that’ are some common comments you come across. A glamorous evening gown looks hotter on the mannequin than on you, and cleavage isn’t at all a part of your vocabulary!

But, did you know there’s something called breast augmentation in India, which can help you instill the ‘ideal’ size of boobs? When you undergo this correction surgery, the result is a remarkable positive metamorphosis altogether!

So, how did the concept really click humankind? What’s its history? Let’s talk about it.

The surgery was first attempted in the year 1895 by German Bohemian surgeon, Vincenz Czerny, when he transferred a patient’s lipoma to the organ to fill the removal of an adenoma.

During this time, a combination of paraffin injections, petroleum jelly, and olive oil were used. However, this often led to serious health complications. Then came J.J Longacre in 1950, who performed autogenous flap augmentation.

But, it was only in 1961 when injectable silicone was introduced by Uchida. Then, in 1962, silicone gel breast implant came into being, initiated by Cronin and Gerow. And, thus started, an era of modern breast correction surgery. This rage has now reached our country, too.

Get the facts about the procedure:

At its core, the surgery is all about increasing or restoring the size of the organs using implants – silicone gel or saline, and in most cases, fat transfer. An incision is made on the boobs and tissue is lifted. This creates a pocket-like effect, which makes room for the implant to be placed.

This incision can be made in any of the following locations – breast fold, edge of the areola, within the areola, in the axillary or armpit, and even in the umbilical area. The fat transfer procedure, on the other hand, makes use of your own body fat, which is then injected into your breasts. Although the process is still in its baby stage, scientists have reported on its promising power.

Know about the implants:

When it’s a breast augmentation surgery, you can sometimes be spoilt for choice! So, know about your options first. Of course, they will pivot on your medical history, body shape, and the result you desire. Well, here are they:

·         Silicone gel implants: These are filled with soft, elastic silicone gel. The implants are pre-filled and available in different shapes. Placing one of these in your boobs might need a longer incision.

·         Saline implants: These are filled with sterile saline solution (salt water, in common tongue). They can either be pre-filled, or modified subtly during surgery.

·         Cohesive gel silicone implants: These are filled with cohesive gel, which is made of cross-linked silicone molecules. They are thicker and firmer than conventional silicone implants, and thus, can hold a better shape.

The placement of the implants will depend on your anatomy and the recommendation of the doctor. In general, it will be placed either underneath the pectoral muscle (between the breast tissue and chest), or the breast tissue (on top of the pectoral muscle).

The most important question – is the procedure safe?

Undergoing a surgery of breast implantation in India can be a heart-searching decision. You want to look good in that evening gown hanging on the mannequin, but you fear to go under the knife. You want to shut people commenting on your small boobs, but wonder if the surgery is safe.

These worries are common. However, please keep in mind that the procedure is intended to last for a lifetime. You may require a replacement, and this definitely calls for periodic examinations post surgery.

And, because there has been much speculation about the use of silicone implants, kindly be aware of the fact that there is NO strong evidence of silicone being linked with connective tissue diseases, reproductive disorders, or breast cancer. Even the FDA has approved it now!

So, should you be wishing for fuller breasts, think ‘augmentation surgery’ without cringing or cowering! Good luck!
